Forever Waiting

"I had an idea for a painting and it took me a while to find just the right dogs.  I wanted to paint three young females and I wanted them to be hunting, field trial or working dogs.

The young Labrador Retriever is my own dog, Annie.  Annie is a small girl who is very serious about her work.  She loves to hunt and is my constant companion in the blind.  You won't find a better pheasant dog than Annie.  Annie has also run in the CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) hunt test program.  Annie is through and through a hunting dog.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is very talented and the prettiest Chessie I have come across.  Flirt is owned by Janet Wilson.  I found Flirt at a field trial in Southern Ontario.  Not only has Flirt excelled at field trials and hunt tests, but she is also an accomplished hunting dog.

The young Golden Retriever down in front is Jett.  Jett is owned by Jill Chalmers and is a "mess of trouble" at any time.  A Canadian Master Hunter, a Sportsman Show competitor, a titled obedience dog and a hunting dog, Jeff is full of life and energy and is a very happy dog.

I specifically chose these three breeds because they reflect three distinct personalities and although they all do the same jobs, they are very different.  It was important to me to not only physically demonstrate their differences but to convey the differences in the breed through their personalities.

You may wonder what these three dogs have in common other than their jobs.  They are "Forever Waiting" for their turn.  They wait in blinds for the ducks to come in.  They stand in lines at tests or trials for their turn to run.  They wait at obedience trials and pheasant hunts.  They are young dogs waiting to take center stage.  They are "Waiting Forever"."

Acrylics and gauche on board were used to implement a layering process in the painting to create a piece that is rich in detail and depth of colour.

Artist's Biography -

Peter Ferin's intial training in fine arts from Sheridan College and the Humber College Design Program set the foundation for his life-long passion for art.  The works of wildlife artists such as Carl Brenders, Jett Brunette and Pat Godin inspired Peter to improve his skills and to reach higher standards of artistic achievement.

As an accomplished wildife sculptor and intent on receiving honest critiques of his work, Peter challenged himself by entering a number of wildlife art competitions.  He has received numerous awards from established art exhitits and juried shows including the Ward World Wildlife Art Competition in Maryland, the Wye Marsh Canadian Wildlife Art Competition in Midland, Ontario, the North American Wildife Art Competition in Michigan, the Canadian Open Wildfowl Art Competion in Toronto, Ontario and the Kaleidoscope Art Exhibit in Burlington, Ontario, just to name a few.

While still sculpting, Peter has spent the last several years turning his talents to painting and drawing.  His subject matter focuses on nature, wildlife and his life-long love of sporting dogs.  The painting technique recreates a textured effect by layering thin washes of acrylic and guache paints, reproducing a quality of work that suggests the look and texture of living subjects.  The paintings are luminous and lifelike in the style of photo realism.

In 2009 Peter entered the prestigious Buckhorn Wildlife Art Festival with his painting "Hoodies" and received an Honorable Mention in a very highly competitive class.  In 2010 Peter entered the competition yet again and won First Place as well as the coveted "People's Choice Award" with "Silent Swan"

He continues to work on his painting and drawing techiques and is currently researching his next piece.  Peter makes his home in Flamborough, Ontario.
